Ingrown Hairs / Folliculitis
About Ingrown Hairs / Folliculitis
What is it?
Folliculitis is a common skin condition in which hair follicles become damaged and inflamed. It’s usually caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. At first, it may look like small red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles — the tiny pockets from which each hair grows.
Characteristics
Folliculitis is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often resulting in small red pimples or pustules centered around hair-bearing areas. These bumps may be itchy, tender, or filled with pus, and can sometimes crust over or cause mild scarring if irritated or left untreated. The inflammation is most commonly caused by a bacterial infection—typically Staphylococcus aureus—but can also result from fungal infections, chemical irritation, or physical friction. Shaving, wearing tight or non-breathable clothing, hot tubs, and excessive sweating can all contribute to the development of folliculitis. While it can affect anyone, individuals with diabetes, obesity, or compromised immune systems are at a higher risk due to reduced skin barrier function and immune response.
Common Treatments
Treatment for folliculitis depends on the severity and cause of the condition. Mild cases often respond well to topical antibiotics or antiseptic washes to reduce bacterial growth and inflammation. For more persistent or widespread cases, oral antibiotics may be prescribed. If a fungal infection is suspected, antifungal creams or oral antifungal medications may be more effective. Addressing the underlying cause is also key—this may include adjusting shaving techniques, avoiding tight or irritating clothing, improving hygiene, or managing underlying health conditions. With proper care, most cases of folliculitis resolve without long-term effects, though chronic or recurrent cases may require ongoing management.
