Keloid (Scars)
About Keloids (Scars)
What are they?
A keloid scar is a thick raised scar. It can occur after a skin injury, bug bite, surgery, or from other forms of trauma to your skin. It is known to form on earlobes, shoulders, cheeks or the chest. If prone to developing keloid scars, know that you can get them in more than one place. The good news is that these are treatable, and your provider will be able to help you come up with a treatment plan.
Characteristics
Keloids are raised, thickened areas of scar tissue that develop at the site of a skin injury, such as a cut, burn, surgical incision, piercing, or even acne. Unlike typical scars, keloids grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and may continue to enlarge over time. They can appear pink, red, purple, or darker than the surrounding skin, and may feel firm, rubbery, or tender to the touch. Some people experience itching, pain, or discomfort, especially as the keloid grows. Keloids are more common in people with darker skin tones and tend to run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition.
Common Treatments
Treating keloids can be challenging, as they have a tendency to recur even after removal. However, several options are available to reduce their size, flatten their appearance, and alleviate symptoms. Common treatments include corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and slow growth, silicone gel sheets or creams to soften and flatten the scar, and cryotherapy (freezing) for smaller lesions. In some cases, laser therapy, pressure therapy, or surgical removal may be considered—often in combination with other therapies to lower the risk of regrowth. Choosing the right treatment depends on the size, location, and severity of the keloid, as well as your individual skin type and medical history.
